Tree Facts

HOW MANY TREES HAVE WE LOST?

City of Winnipeg GIS data shows that we have 170 elms currently standing along the boulevards of Wolseley and Westminster Avenues, but have lost 83 of them since 2023 alone! There are today 1004 elms left on city land in Wolseley compared to 1257 in 2023 (a loss rate of 10% year-over-year).

At this rate, in 10 years time there will be no elm trees left in Wolseley!

WHAT IS THE COST ANALYSIS OF TREE REMOVAL VS INNOCULATION?

The cost of tree inoculation and tree removal can be calculated based on tree diameter size (DBH).

  • Tree Removal:  $1,000 (40-59 cm); $2,000 (60-79 cm); $3,000 (+80 cm)

  • Tree inoculation:  $9.00 per tree cm DBH (discounted rate – regular rate is $11.00)

A mature elm tree at 70cm diameter would cost $630.00 to inoculate (3-years immunity), whereas that same tree would cost $2000.00 to cut down (costs are before taxes).  This does not even include additional costs for replanting and associated maintenance (watering).

Trees could be inoculated 3 times (for total 10-year immunity) for approximately the same cost as cutting those trees down!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF URBAN TREES?

Urban trees and forests provide a wide range of social, economic and environmental benefits:

  • Improve mental and physical health

  • Encourage traffic calming

  • Produce shade

  • Enrich habitat and biodiversity

  • Manage stormwater

  • Improve air quality and mitigate climate change

  •  Increase property value

  • And more!

WHAT IS THE VALUE ($) OF WOLSELEY’S URBAN FOREST?

Based on an i-Tree Canopy assessment conducted in May 2025 and the City’s tree inventory:

  • Wolseley’s Canopy cover is estimated at 24% (compared to the City average of 17%).

  • There are 3,310 total public trees in Wolseley (1,005 American Elms), though the vast majority of trees are on private land and not inventoried.

  • Wolseley’s forest has an estimated replacement cost of $3.97 million (based on an average replanting and establishment cost of $1,200/tree).

  • Wolseley’s trees provide $2.08 million in carbon storage value.

  • And over $100,000/year in annual ecosystem service value, including:

    • $82,935 in carbon sequestration

    • $14,571 in air pollution removal

    • $4,441 in stormwater management (avoided runoff)

American elm trees account for approximately 30% of all public trees in Wolseley, but due to their large canopy size and presence on private land, they are estimated to contribute 50–60% of Wolseley’s total canopy cover benefits.
